Will ensure screams of migrant workers reach govt: Rahul Gandhi
The Congress party has been attempting to increase pressure on the Central government to roll out stimulus packages to help the migrant workers and lower-income groups amid the COVID-19 triggered economic crisis.
The Congress pary has been trying to pressurise the Narendra Modi government to roll out stimulus packages to help the masses fight the COVID-19 induced economic crisis. And former Congress president Rahul Gandhi has been at the helm of these critical attacks on the Centre,,.
On Thursday, Gandhi said his party would ensure that the screams of migrant workers reach the government. He described them as the ones carrying the country's flag.
"There is dense darkness and these are difficult times, have courage, all of us are standing for the safety of all of them. We will ensure that their screams reach the government and they get the help they deserve,” the former Congress president said. “They are not the ordinary public of the country, they are the flag bearers of the country's self-respect. We will never let them bow down," he further added.
pic.twitter.com/bBf48DiluY— Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) May 14, 2020
Along with his tweet, Gandhi also shared a video of migrant labourers walking on the roads of the country in an attempt to reach their native places amid the lockdown.
Ever since the countrywide lockdown has been imposed, crores of migrant workers have been forced out of their jobs. Despite all attempts, state governments have failed to stop the movement of migrant workers to return to their home states.
Opposition parties including the Congress have been demanding a relief package and direct cash transfer scheme for the migrant workers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on May 12, had announced Rs 20 lakh crore COVID-19 economic package for the nation. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has addressed two press conferences announcing a slew of relief for the business including MSMEs and food distribution schemes for the migrant workers.
Today, FM Sitharaman annonced the scheme for supply of free foodgrains to eight crore migrant workers for next two months. " The total cost of this scheme is estimated at Rs 3,500 crore," she told media. The finance minister had also unveiled the "One Nation, One Ration" scheme.
