Who are 'digisexuals' (and why should we care about them)?
These are people whose primary sexual identity comes through the use of technology.
Even though it’s not an official term just yet, the use of the term 'digisexuals' is likely to become popular in time.
According to a paper titled "The Rise of Digisexuality", which was published in a journal last year, people whose primary sexual identity comes through the use of technology can be called digisexuals.
How do we identify them?
The “first wave” of digisexuals are a class of people who satisfy their sexual needs through online pornography, hook-up apps, sexting and electronic sex toys. Here the technology only acts as a “delivery system”.
The “second wave” includes more immersive technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality and AI-equipped sex robots.
What does the future hold for digisexuals?
The numbers of digisexuals are expected to increase with our rising dependency on technology to satisfy all needs. We already have sex robots. They’re now expected to become better at assessing human sexual desires with the help of AI.
There are also reports that suggest digisexuals in the future will face discrimination for having sex with robots.
The question of consent and treatment of robots by digisexuals, too, is going to be a major concern. There are already plenty of reports of mistreatment of robots in the news.
Do we know any digisexuals?
Yes. There was recently a story about a Chinese artificial intelligence engineer who married the robot he built. There have been other reports too of human beings that have formed deep, intimate and emotional relationship with robots and toys.
Look around you, can you identify any digisexuals?
