Which internet site receives the most traffic?
Video is the most popular content on the internet at the moment and Netflix takes most of the traffic.
Video is the most popular content on the internet at the moment. Videos account for 58 per cent of the total downstream traffic volume on the internet. Browsing, gaming, and social media receive around 17, 7.8, and 5.1 per cent of the total traffic.
Embedded videos on websites receive around 13.1 per cent of the video traffic, YouTube takes 11.4 per cent and web browsing takes up to 7.8 per cent of the traffic.
Cam Cullen, the vice-president of marketing says, "The numbers for video are going to get higher as more and more content goes high definition and users turn more to 4K."
Gaming and file sharing is also becoming a significant force in traffic volume. The reports mention that Netflix can take up to 40 per cent of the download traffic during peak evening hours.
The research data:
This content report that talks about the internet traffic and types of content consumed on the internet has been published by bandwidth management company Sandvine.
Sandvine's Global Internet Phenomena Report has been compiled after taking data from 150 service providers around the world. These service providers represent around 2.1 billion subscribers around the world.
Now, coming to the upload traffic, file-sharing services receive around 22 per cent of the upload traffic. In Europe and the Middle East, it can even rise to 31 per cent.
Online gaming platforms and services like Twitch and game downloads are also creating traffic jams online. The reason can be attributed to the switch of game downloads from physical disks to online downloads. For example, downloading a copy of Call of Duty can take up to 101 GB of data. This data is equivalent to playing 4k video for 14 hours.
Why is there an increase in gaming traffic?
The report suggests the mood of players have gone beyond the purpose of entertainment. The rise in professional gaming leagues is tempting gamers to perfect their skills increasing their time spent on games. Cullen says, "Some now see gaming as a craft, not just a hobby."
The internet is secure as most of the traffic online is encrypted. This is good news for all of us as it will be difficult to sneak into our internet activity. But, this doesn't mean we are not prone to data breaches, hacks, theft, and cyber attacks.
Platforms and their popularity:
Embedded videos on websites are most popular in the Asia-Pacific region. Facebook and Netflix secure the second and third place respectively in this region. Europeans are fans of Youtube followed by Netflix and videos embedded on the websites. Apart from this, they also prefer watching Amazon Prime.
But America is different as Amazon is the most popular platform surpassing Youtube.
