What is Shoelace, and is it going to replace Facebook?
Shoelace is a social networking app created by Google. The app is currently available for users based in New York.
What is Shoelace?
Shoelace is a free to download app from Google. It plans to connect people with similar interests through in-person activities. It is expected to be useful for people who have recently shifted to a new city or those who want to socialise with similar people living around.
But, before you ask about the unique name, the company has an explanation for you. Google says that like shoelaces, the app will tie people together based on their interests. The app will help users find activities of their interest called 'Loops' (resembling the loops in shoelaces).
For now, you can use the app only if you are based in New York. People who want to use the app need to send an access request to Google. The app is currently operating on an invite-only basis. Google says that "Our mission is to use technology to help facilitate real-world connection."
Users can also create their own event and invite people for the activity. People who are not using the app can also be invited to an event. Shoelace is currently available for Android (v.8.0 or newer) and iOS (v11.0) or newer devices.
In the past, Google launched the social media network known as Google Plus. The platform failed and was shuttered in the initial months of 2019.
If you are looking for apps that can help you find activities near you, there are many apps available in both Android and iOS. Facebook also has a dedicated section called Events. This section helps users in finding events that are happening around them.
Since Facebook has more users, it is expected to have more options as compared to other apps.
So, time for the million-dollar question: Is Shoelace going to replace Facebook?
Google says that this app is focused on bringing people together and that the events taking place will require people to interact in the real world.
Facebook has an Events section that provides services that are similar to Shoelace. But it will be difficult to compare Shoelace with Facebook because Facebook is diverse and serves many purposes for users. Even if Google is able to make its mark in an event hosting platform, Facebook has a huge number of people following it for other purposes. So, even though comparisons have started, it’s difficult to compare these two platforms.
