Watch: The Oscar winner for Best Animated Short is a love story that matters
The animated short which revolves around an African-American father who struggles to style his daughter’s natural hair is available to watch on YouTube.
“Hair love” is a sweet and short story about a little girl who seeks the help of her African-American father to style her natural hair in her mom’s absence. There’s no conversation between the father-daughter duo and except for a hairstyling tutorial, the story is completely told through the characters’ gestures and expressions.
Why is the little girl so determined to fashion her thick curls into a stylish hairdo and how did her dad learn to use the intimidating array of hair tools and products to finally finish his mission?
Watch this six-minute short film that drives home the message-- let’s share some love and embrace our identity.
It should be noted that the short film has won the Oscars in a year that saw very limited racial diversity. Cynthia Erivo of “Harriet” was the only actor of colour to be nominated for this year’s Oscars.
