The Unnao rape victim has been shifted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi from Lucknow in an air ambulance on Tuesday. She has been admitted to the Trauma Centre for critical care and recovery as per the directions of the Supreme Court.
This morning, Delhi Police coordinated with other civic agencies to create a 13-km green corridor from Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport to AIIMS to facilitate smooth passage of the ambulance carrying the Unnao victim. Traffic sources said the patient was taken from the airport to hospital in just 18 minutes.
The girl was under specialist care in Lucknow’s King George Medical University and the UP police got ready on Monday to airlift her to Delhi after the family approached the apex court with their intent to transfer the victim to Delhi. The 15 km distance from King George Medical College to Lucknow airport was also cordoned off for movement of the ambulance without any hindrance.
Expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar is the prime accused in the case involving the head-on collision of a truck with the car in which the victim, her lawyer and two aunts were travelling. While her aunts died on the spot, the lawyer and the victim are in critical condition. Sengar is also the prime accused in the alleged rape of the victim. Both the victim and Sengar are neigbours and victim’s father passed away allegedly due to police brutality after he went to the police station to complain about the rape.
Taking cognisance of a letter sent by the victim to Supreme Court appealing for safety and justice, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi held a special hearing of the case last week and ordered the transfer of the cases of Delhi and completion of the investigation in a time-bound manner.
Sengar was presented before a judge in a lower court in Delhi on Monday on the rape case.
