Weekend MMA Roundup: UFC 237 and Bellator 221 Saw the Derailing of Two Hype Jobs
The Mixed MArtial Arts world is not kind to fighters who bring a ton of hype with them, and tonight we saw the destruction of two of the most hyped fighters in MMA in brutal fashion.
It was an incredible night for fight fans around the world as we were treated to the absolute decimation of two of the most hyped fighters in MMA today. Rose Namajunas’s face was introduced to the canvas courtesy of a vicious slam by Jessica Andrade at UFC 237 while Michael ‘Venom’ Page was knocked out cold by the dangerous Douglas Lima over in Bellator.
UFC 237 took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and was supposed to be the first real test for straw-weight champion Rose Namajunas. After having defeated her rival in back-to-back fights, Rose looked to extend her streak of championship defences to 2 but Jessica Andrade had other plans. The Brazilian looked to be just a step slower than the champ as she ate a few hard counters in the first round. With her left eye busted open, she came out like a bat out of hell in the second round. She pushed Rose to the cage and shot in for a single leg takedown. She picked up the champ and proceeded to hit her with the force of the Earth as she slammed Rose Namajunas right on her head, knocking the champion out. The partisan crowd erupted in rapturous cheers for their new Brazilian straw-weight queen.
Over in Bellator Fighting Champions, Douglas Lima showed us all why he’s one of the best welter-weights in the world. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt looked every bit the killer he was always touted to be and sent the incredibly hyped Michael ‘Venom’ Page to the shadow realm with a wicked uppercut. After having controlled the first round with his wrestling and top control, Lima was hit with straight right that wobbled him a little. Page immediately jumped in to finish him, but was met with a thunderous leg-kick that swept him off his feet. In the ensuing chaos, Lima landed a pin point uppercut that shut Page’s lights out. There was no hint of that aggressive posturing from Lima after the knockout. He calmly walked around the cage, ever the consummate professional. It was an emphatic win for the former Bellator welter-weight champion and a serving of humble pie for Michael ‘Venom’ Page.
In other action, Anderson Silva was rendered unable to continue after he took one too many leg-kicks from Jared Cannonier. It’s always sad to see a legend go out like this but Silva is 42 years old. It really is time for him to hang up the gloves.
Michael Chandler was victim to an early stoppage against Patricio Fiere in their champ vs champ clash. Chandler didn’t get the chance to defend himself as he was dropped by a right hand and while he was getting up, the referee stepped in and stopped the fight. It was an excellent win for Fiere who becomes the first man to stop Chandler in the first round.
The Jose Aldo vs Alex Volkanovski fight was a disappointing clash where we saw the worst aspects of MMA pop up. Volkanovski stalled out the entire second and third rounds to take the judges decision. It was a poor showing from the Aussie who does not deserve a title shot after such a dismal win. He needs to fight another top-5 feather-weight first.
