Trolls have field day: target umpire Joel Wilson in the Edgbaston Ashes Test
Umpire Joel Wilson was the most talked about man on the field, along with Aussie batsman Steve Smith, who got two 100s. His record 10 howlers set off a storm of tweets and memes from trolls.
Umpire Joel Wilson, if anyone has noticed, was the most talked about man on the field, along with former Australian captain Steve Smith, who scored two 100s in the first Test in the 2019 Ashes series at Edgbaston, England. There are no other umpires who have taken so many bad decisions in a test. Wilson made 10 bad decisions during the game. Co-umpire Aleem Dar was a little better; he had only 5 wrong decisions.
On the fifth day, the two LBW decisions against England captain Root were wrongly given. Both times, the DRS [decision review system] helped correct them.
Wilson was not let go of by social media. The hapless umpire was bombarded with trolls and memes.
In the Test, Australia beat England by 251 runs. But it wasn't about Australia's dominance, or England's surrender; it was about Wilson's tryst with cricket history. Former captain Michael Vaughan advised the English players that whenever Wilson called out, they should go for the DRS.
Meanwhile, trolls have also vandalised Wilson's Wikipedia page. He has been treated as if he was the blindest cricketing umpire in international cricket. The tweets and memes kept coming.
