Tripura CM Biplab Deb says: Punjabis, Jats physically strong but have less brains
Tripura Chief Minister Deb has stirred up yet another controversy by saying that Punjabis and Jats are less brainy. The comment has received strong criticism from the Congress party which has asked the BJP to act against its leader.
Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has stirred up yet another controversy by saying that Punjabis and Jats are physically strong but less brainy, while Bengalis are known to be very intelligent.
The Bharatiya Janata Party leader, while addressing a programme at the Agartala Press Club on Sunday, had said that every community in India is known for its types and characteristics. The video of the controversial statement is doing the rounds on social media and has received strong criticism.
Meanwhile, the Congress has termed the chief minister's remarks as "shameful and unfortunate".
"For Bengal or Bengalis, it is said that one should not challenge them when it is regarding intelligence. Bengalis are known as very intelligent and it is their identity," the Tripura CM was heard saying in the clip.
Whereas Punjabis and Jats are known for their physical strength, he said.
"When we talk about the people of Punjab, we say he's a Punjabi, a Sardar. They may have less intelligence but are very strong. One can't win them over by strength but with love and affection. A large number of Jats live in Haryana. So what do people say about Jats? Jats are less intelligent but are very healthy. If one challenges a Jat, he will bring a gun from his house," Deb said.
Congress’ national chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala attacked Deb for his comments. Surjewala, who hails from Haryana, said that the Tripura CM has insulted the "Sikh brothers" of Punjab and the Jat community of Haryana.
"This is the BJP's lowly mindset. Why are (Haryana CM ML) Khattar ji and Dushyant Chautala silent? Where are (PM) Modi ji and (JP) Nadaji? Apologize, take action," the Congress leader tweeted.

— Biplab Kumar Deb (@BjpBiplab) July 21, 2020
मुझे पंजाबी और जाट दोनों ही समुदायों पर गर्व है। मैं खुद भी काफी समय तक इनके बीच रहा हूँ।
"I always salute the contributions of the Punjabi and Jat communities in the freedom struggle of the country. And I can never imagine raising questions on the role played by these two communities in advancing India," Deb tweeted.
