The trending MPs of the digital age
Member of Parliament Nusarat Jahan married businessman Nikhil Jain in a family only event in Bodrum, Turkey on Wednesday. Her fellow Parliamentarian Mimi Chakraborty was also present at the wedding. She took to Twitter early in the morning on Thursday to post her bridal pictures. The nuptial frames of the first time MP found more takers than any other event online.
When the President of India was addressing the joint sitting of Parliament, and everyone was glued to listen to the priorities of the new government for the next five years. One Member of Parliament (MP) was notable not just for her absense, but that she upstaged the President's address, at least online.
Nusarat Jahan, the first time MP from West Bengal, was trending on social media and was among the top searched terms on Google on Thursday.
Jahan, who is yet to be sworn in, missed the oath taking ceremony. She was in the news even before the Parliament session began when she was brutally trolled for tweeting pictures of herself and fellow Trinamool Congress MP Mimi Chakraborty posing in front of Parliament.

Nusarat Jahan and Mimi Chakraborty are both popular Bangla film actors who were hand-picked by the Trinamool chief Mamata Bannerjee to contest polls. They’re a part of a contingent with the most number of elected women in Parliament. This time the Lower House has 78 women members while the last Lok Sabha, which ended its tenure in 2019, had only 62. Both of them also represent the changing personality perceptions around the MPs in the digital age.

While there was a time when a comment or remark on a people’s representative could have attracted a “privilege motion”, the two Bengal MPs have been not just trolled and commented upon but are also part of memes and jokes going around. Maybe in the cyber-age, the discussions on MPs of India are also coming of age.
