During the month of August two decades ago, Sushma Swaraj delivered a speech in Ballari, Karnataka. She knew how to get people’s attention and was well aware as to how to please them. This speech became a memorable one for two reasons; the first one being that she learned the local language Kannada and delivered her entire speech without reading, very fluently. The second reason was the way she described her opponent Sonia Gandhi and placed herself in such a way that the election back then appeared as though it was a 'daughter vs daughter-in-law' battle, with Swaraj positioning herself as the daughter of India and Gandhi as the daughter-in law-of India (Italian born).
In her speech, Swaraj mentioned that she being their (people’s) daughter, she was just asking for saree and kumkum, whereas Sonia Gandhi was asking for votes along with saree and kumkum. She goes on to add that Priyanka Gandhi asked for people to save her mother by voting for Sonia, for which Swaraj's reply was to save our motherland by voting in favour of BJP. She told the people of Ballari that Sonia Gandhi intended to become the PM of the nation. After losing the elections, Swaraj said she lost the battle but she won the war.
When the Congress got their majority in 2014, Swaraj said she would have gotten her head shaved and would have donned a white saree if Sonia Gandhi had become the PM, because Indians underwent a lot of struggle to get freedom from Britishers and seeing a non-Indian PM would hurt her sentiment.
