Spy technology takes a step forward with these new battery enabled lenses
Researchers have developed a new type of contact lens that comes equipped with a flexible micro-battery.
Google recently announced their augmented reality enabled Maps feature. Google Maps will now display all your directional messages and interfaces in augmented reality. We have also seen AR enabled glassed that displays a ton of information in real time. Now, there is a new lens developed by researchers that comes with a small battery. According to the researchers, this is the first autonomous contact lens that comes with a flexible micro-battery.
The battery in the lens will enable various functions including a light-emitting diode (LED) for several hours. This project is said to be a part of a larger project that is expected to create a new generation of oculometers. Oculometers are devices that help in the measurement of the condition and movements of the eye. This project can further be expanded to augmented reality helmets that will give users a varied experience.
Researchers say that this also puts constraints on precision and integration. The application of the lens can also be expanded, once it is integrated with graphene-based flexible electronics. Particularly, it will help make the contact lens transparent. Once we include transparent electronics in the lens, it can perform more advanced functions than we can imagine now.
The battery that has been integrated with the lens can be used for various purposes including RF communication (wireless function) and the optical detection of gaze direction. Talking about the usage of the new lenses, it can be used for surgical assistance, driving and much more.
This kind of tech will help us augment our senses in a much better way. What do you think could be the other applications of these types of lenses? Scanning documents, recording videos through your eyes or improving vision? Let us know in the comments below.
