Delhi violence: Sonia Gandhi deputes 5-member team to visit riot-affected areas
The five-member team has been asked to submit a detailed report to the Congress President immediately, according to the party statement.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi has deputed a five-member team to visit the riot-affected areas in Northeast Delhi and submit a report to her after assessing the situation there. The delegation comprises AICC general Secretary Mukul Wasnik, AICC in-charge Delhi Shaktisinh Gohil, Haryana PCC chief Kumari Selja, Ex-MP Tariq Anwar, and Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev.
"The Congress president has deputed a delegation of party leaders to visit the riot-affected areas in the National Capital of Delhi and asked the leaders to assess the situation emanating from the mindless violence in riot-affected areas and its after effects," the party said in a statement.
The team has been asked to submit a "detailed report to the Congress President immediately", the statement added.
This comes as the death toll in Delhi's communal violence rose to 39 on Friday. There were some areas of normalcy in the riot-hit localities of Northeast Delhi with shops opening, PTI reported.
On Thursday evening, Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting to review the law and order situation in Delhi. The meeting was attended by senior police and government officials, including the Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Patnaik and Srivastava.
According to officials, no major incident had been reported across any of the affected areas in the last 36 hours. They said that orders banning large gatherings, issued under Section 144, would be relaxed for 10 hours on Friday, in view of improving ground situation.
Nearly 7,000 paramilitary forces have been deployed in the affected areas of the northeast district since Monday. Hundreds of Delhi police personnel are on the ground to maintain peace.
More than 200 people have been injured in the communal clashes that broke out on Monday. The areas affected include Jaffrabad, Maujpur, Chand Bagh, Khureji Khas and Bhajanpura.
