Samsung patents rollable smartphone, but Galaxy Fold yet to hold the market
Foldable smartphones are not common yet and Galaxy Fold had some issue, Samsung is planning for rollable smartphones.
Rollable: glue stick, chartpapers, newspapers, lipsticks, yoga mat. What else is rollable? Smartphones, apparently, and soon! LG just launched a rollable TV, and the same technology is soon to be applied to smartphones.
Samsung has filed a patent for smartphones that comes with a rollable display. You might get confused once you see the patented smartphone at first glance. It doesn't look any different from a normal device. But, once you check out it works, you will be blown away.
The smartphone slides from top to bottom, just like a slider phone. But, once the phone has been slid down, the display gets rolled along with the phone. As seen in the patent images, the smartphone comes with two rollers located at the center and bottom of the phone. These rollers help in rolling the display.
The images seen in patents might not come as a final product and the real product might be different once launched. There are many challenges that tech companies need to overcome before they bring these types of devices to the market. As we have seen already, foldable smartphones do have issues with the display. This could be attributable to the fact that the rush to market release didn’t leave enough time for the proper testing of this technology.
Either way, launching a smartphone with arollable display might take atleast few years. The process to materialize a patent into product is quite long and ardous. Until then, let’s make foldable smartphones more durable and enjoy it until we move on to the next tech.
