Rohit Sharma out of India's tour of New Zealand: BCCI source
Rohit Sharma did not take the field in the second innings after injuring his calf while batting in the fifth T20 against New Zealand.
In what comes as shock to Team India fans, India's limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI and Test series against New Zealand after sustaining a calf injury in the fifth T20 International on Sunday.
Rohit retired hurt after scoring a stunning 60 off 41 balls after he pulled his calf muscle while going for a quick single during the match in Mount Maunganui.
Standing in as the captain of the team in the absence of Virat Kohli, Rohit showed selflessness in sacrificing his opening slot for the young Sanju Samson. But as Samson failed to make use of the opportunity with the bat, Rohit joined KL Rahul for the partnership which made India's total respectable.
In fact, before Rohit had to retire hurt it seemed that India could easily go beyond the 180-run mark.
"He is out of the tour," a top BCCI source told PTI on conditions on anonymity. But this update contradicts KL Rahul's statement that "Rohit's alright and should be fine in a couple of days," which he made at the post-match presentation on Sunday.
The news comes as more of a shock for the fans as Rohit looked to be sublime form, breaking records and reaching milestones. While scoring his match-winning 60*, Rohit hit his 25th score of 50 or more in the shortest format, thus overtaking Kohli on the list of players with most 50+ scores in T20Is. On the other hand, Rohit also joined the elite list of Indians who have completed 14,000 runs in international cricket. Rohit became the eighth one join the list after Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Virender Sehwag and Mohammad Azharuddin.
India are set to play three ODIs against the Black Caps, starting Wednesday, and two Tests after that.
