Poha favourite food for PM Modi, but a marker for Bangladeshis for Vijayvargiya
Will Vijayvargiya call the PM a Bangladeshi too?
BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya 'cooked up' a storm when he shared his suspicion about the nationality of labourers working at his house based on their food habit. Speaking at a pro-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) seminar in Indore (also known as the poha capital), the senior politician said, "They were eating only 'poha' (flattened rice) all the time. The construction workers' strange eating habits made me suspect their nationality. I suspected that these workers were Bangladeshis. Two days after I became suspicious, they stopped working at my house."
This statement riled up a lot of people online. From the usual trolls to the lovers of flattened rice, a lot of people expressed their outrage over this apparently random statement.
If reports are to be believed, then the Prime Minister himself would also be offended. For, in a interview in May 2019, PM Narendra Modi had revealed that poha happens to be one of his favourite dishes. Talking about his daily routine before he joined politics, PM Modi mentioned that his morning hours were dedicated to cooking Poha. The prime minister was also quoted saying that he himself made quite a scrumptious preparation of flattened rice.
Several have criticised Vijayvargiya's statement deeming it an insult to all the people whose daily diet includes poha. While some have seen this statement as an anti-poor one, because in many places like West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand, flattened rice is asscoiated with workers and travellers who often do not have the means to have a full meal.

Twiteratti too got into a frenzy over this bizarre statement, here are some glimpses.
I wonder whether this man has heard of Krishna and Sudama .... and the story of the gift of poha. https://t.co/ZXV74PbayQ— Harini Calamur (@Calamur@mastodon.social) (@calamur) January 24, 2020
By this logic Indori and Punekars are also Bangladeshi. What a tool.— अंशुल (@Ghair_Kanooni) January 24, 2020
Really strange that construction workers in Indore were consuming Poha - a staple & cheap food of Madhya Pradesh -easily available too -— Yasmin Kidwai (@YasminKidwai) January 24, 2020

Ab lack of kaagaz nahin, poha will be your undoing ???? https://t.co/Qbz85Ws5k9
Oh so we have already reached the "you eat too much poha so you must be Bangladeshi" stage of branding people? https://t.co/wz9dBCe3J2— Manu S Pillai (@UnamPillai) January 23, 2020
Earlier, Sanghis had a beef with biryani. Now Poha is the new beef.— Chirpy Says (@IndianPrism) January 24, 2020
