The National Sports Day is celebrated across the country on 29 August (Thursday) to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand—the man regarded as nation's greatest hockey player of all time. The legendary hockey player won India three gold medals during the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympics. He scored over 400 goals in his career spanning over two decades. On this day, President of India honours eminent sports personalities with major awards including Khel Ratna, Arjuna Awards, Dronacharya Awards and Dhyan Chand Award.
