Many Languages, Many Voices, Many Stories: Tulika's online reading campaign
Tulika's online reading campaign, Many Languages, Many Voices, Many Stories attracted like-minded partners, actors, writers and poets who have come forward to tell stories from the picture books and read from them. Kalki Koechlin reads 'Go Away Coronavirus!', a picture book in verse by Divya Thomas.
At the forefront of multilingual children's publishing for almost 25 years, Tulika’s books in nine languages – English, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati and Bangla - have reached widely across socio-economic classes. Tulika was awarded the 2019 Literary Translation Initiative Award at the London Book Fair.
When the lockdown began mid-March, Tulika launched an online reading campaign called Many Languages, Many Voices, Many Stories. Like-minded partners, actors, writers and poets have come forward to tell stories from the picture books and read from them. All of them are putting a little extra into this project that offers children of all ages entertainment, reassurance, and hope in a world that's changed so suddenly for them.
A highlight of this campaign is the multilingual readings of Go Away Coronavirus!, a picture book in verse by Divya Thomas, that is very timely. It talks to children about their safety, speaks to their fears, and gets them to look at the bright side. Free e-books can be downloaded on the author's website.
The readings by Kalki Koechlin in English, Shilpa Pilgaonkar in Hindi, and Suhasini Maniratnam in Tamil are up on Tulika's website. Readings in more languages will follow all through June.
