Maharashtra government will consider virginity test as sexual assault
To eliminate the social evil, the state wants to make it a punishable offence.
The Maharashtra government has declared the virginity test, performed by communities like Kanjarbhat, a punishable offence. It would now be considered a form of sexual assault. Maharashtra state minister Ranjit Patil, in a meeting with young activists from the community and The Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti, promised that victims would be given legal help. Tests involve newly-wed women being forced to prove that they are virgins on their wedding night by showing blood stains on their bed sheets.
