Behind the Beat: Kimera & Abbas K release ‘Fight For Ya’ on Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike's label
Music Producer and DJ Kimera speaks about how his debut single 'Fight For Ya' was picked by the world's #1 DJs Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike's label, Generation Smash.
It would be a dream of any young music producer to release their debut single for an international label, but the duo of Kimera and Abbas K have made it reality with their track ‘Fight For Ya’.
The peppy but emotional dance-pop track by the Mumbai duo has been released in collaboration with the world's #1 DJs Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike's label, Generation Smash.
The sound is fresh and exactly the kind that you'd keep playing in your car. Speaking to Asiaville, Kimera said that they recorded the first demo three years back. Since then ‘Fight For Ya’ has had multiple versions, and the duo, multiple rejections.
“At least 13 labels rejected us during this three year period. I was 17 or 18 at that point. Abbas and I were devastated. I thought my career was over even before it started. Then I picked myself up and kept working on it, until I found my sound. Then this year we made the final cut and Generation Smash picked it up. Being able to put out my debut track on Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike’s label is by far one of the best things that have ever happened in my life” said the 21-year old on Asiaville’s Behind the Beat.
Both Pratham Mehra aka Kimera and Abbas Kagalwala work as DJs along with producing their original music. The duo also worked on the background score of the short film, 'Carbon,' featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, which was awarded the coveted Dadasaheb Phalke Award under the best short film category. It garnered over 10 million views on YouTube and was showcased as part of a special event with a host of Indian and International celebrities, and delegates of the Global Citizen Foundation and the UN in attendance.
“I recall tweeting about how excited I was for Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike performing in India back in 2013. I have followed all their releases from day 1 and having ‘Fight For Ya’ signed to their label is a fantasy fulfilled! It is more than just a song, it’s an emotion, it is for everyone out there who is in a battle with either themselves or someone they love. Give it time, it will get better,” said Abbas K.
Speaking about his Bollywood dreams and why go for an international sound rather than sticking to a more traditional sound, Kimera said he’d definitely like to work on movies given that he can bring his sound to the party and accentuate the project.
The single comes at a time where the EDM circuit and the festival economy can see a massive change given the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking about whether that scares him, the Mumbai boy said, “It is every artists’ dream to play their own tracks in front of a big crowd and have them react to it. But right now there is so much uncertainty. I see so many DJs doing live streams on Instagram or Twitch or Discord, and thousands of people joining from their homes. Perhaps that’s the future of live music. There might not be a lot of money involved in virtual concerts, but it is still music and the artists are reaching their audience.”
