Badminton player Srikanth, who topped the world rankings in 2017, is now 9th on the list. But his hunger for victory is undimmed
India's leading badminton player Srikanth Kidambi has a clear-cut goal: win the 2020 Olympic Games singles title. He says that he is also focusing on winning the former badminton series for the Olympics.
Srikanth was in Chennai for the inauguration of the VSR Sports Academy, in Tambaram, on the city’s outskirts . Srikanth shared with Asiaville Tamil his thoughts on the game and on his training.
The VSR Sports Academy is set up with wooden flooring to meet the World Badminton Federation's standards. Commenting on this, Srikanth said this would be very helpful for budding badminton players in Tamil Nadu.
Srikanth Kidambi of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, was ranked the number 1 badminton player of the year in 2017. But he is now ranked 9th globally.
Speaking about next year's Olympics, Srikanth said that before that there are a total of 15 badminton series and his focus was on winning those.
Talking about his game, he said, “It’s been a good time for me. Although I haven't played for the last 2 months, 2019 has been pretty good. There are more series coming. I am concentrating on playing better. ”
Asked if he had if there was a crisis of confidence after the downturn since 2017, he said he had not lost heart and that winning matches was what he wants to do.
His ambition was to win a medal in the Olympics 2020 in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. As far as Indian badminton is concerned, India has won a number of medals in the last six years, including the Commonwealth Games, the Asian Games and the Olympics, he pointed out.
