Kashmir Article 370: Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah and other political reactions
BSP, BJD, YSRCP, Shiv Sena, AAP have extended support to the government's move. Congress and JD(U) have opposed the Bill till now.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament proposed scrapping of Article 370 from Indian Constitution which provides special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The proposal evoked massive uproar from the Opposition which asked the Union government to roll back the order.
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti lashed out at the Centre saying that “India has failed Kashmir in keeping its promises, and that the “temple of democracy have been deceived”.
"Today marks the darkest day in Indian democracy. Decision of J&K leadership to reject 2 nation theory in 1947 & align with India has backfired. Unilateral decision of GOI to scrap Article 370 is illegal & unconstitutional which will make India an occupational force in J&K. It will have catastrophic consequences for the subcontinent. GOIs intentions are clear,” she tweeted.
What did J&K get for acceding to India? Another partition along communal lines? Our special status isn’t a gift bestowed upon us. Its a right guaranteed by the same ???????? parliament. A contract entered into by J&K leadership & India. Today the very same contract has been violated— Mehbooba Mufti (@MehboobaMufti) August 5, 2019
“GOIs intention is clear & sinister. They want to change demography of the only muslim majority state in India, disempower Muslims to the extent where they become second class citizens in their own state,” she added.
National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, who is also under house arrest, called it a shocking decision and said, "GOI has resorted to deceit and stealth in recent weeks to lay the ground for these disastrous decisions. Our darkest apprehensions have unfortunately come true after the GOI and it's representatives in J&K lied to us that nothing major was planned. The announcement was announced after the entire State, particularly the Kashmir Valley, was turned into a garrison.”
“Government of India (GOI)'s unilateral and shocking decisions today are a total betrayal of the trust that the people of Jammu & Kashmir had reposed in India when the State acceded to it in 1947. The decisions will have far-reaching and dangerous consequences. This is an aggression against people of the State as had been warned by an all-parties meeting in Srinagar yesterday,” he added.

BJP leader and former finance minister Arun Jaitley called the scrapping of Article 370 a "monumental decision towards national integration."
“A historical wrong has been undone today. Article 35A came through the back door without following the procedure under Article 368 of the Constitution of India. It had to go,” he wrote on Twitter.
Another BJP veteran Sushma Swaraj congratulated the government’s “bold and historic decision”.
बहुत साहसिक और ऐतिहासिक निर्णय. श्रेष्ठ भारत - एक भारत का अभिनन्दन.— Sushma Swaraj (@SushmaSwaraj) August 5, 2019
A bold and historic decision. We salute our Great India - one India.
BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav labelled it as a "glorious day" and reminding his followers that a "seven decade old demand of d entire nation being realised in front of our eyes".
What a glorious day. Finally d martyrdom of thousands starting with Dr Shyam Prasad Mukharjee for compete integration of J&K into Indian Union is being honoured and d seven decade old demand of d entire nation being realised in front of our eyes; in our life time.Ever imagined?????— Ram Madhav (@rammadhavbjp) August 5, 2019
Subramanian Swamy showered a self-praise on himself, saying that his theory regarding Kashmir has been proved right.
So I am proved right. To abolish Art 370 we do not need a Constitutional Amendment. Amit Shah has however informed Parliament by way of a Resolution what President today has already notified. Art 370 died today. Collaterally so Art 35 A— Subramanian Swamy (@Swamy39) August 5, 2019
Janata Dal (United), a BJP ally, didn’t support the government on the scrapping of Article 370.
“Our chief Nitish Kumar is carrying forward the tradition of JP Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia & George Fernandes. So our party is not supporting the Bill moved in the Rajya Sabha today. We have different ways of thinking. We want that Article 370 should not be revoked,” party general secretary and national spokesperson KC Tyagi told the Rajya Sabha.
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad condemned the government's proposal to revoke Article 370, and accused the BJP of murdering the Constitution.
