IPL 2020: MS Dhoni makes a 'mass entry', starts preparatory camp with Chennai Super Kings
Dhoni, who led India to ODI and T20 World Cup victories, has not played competitive cricket for a long period amidst widespread speculations that he will retire post the T20 tournament in May.
Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is back in Chennai and is all set to start preparing for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign where he will once again captain Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
The wicketkeeper-batsman, who had been on a sabbatical post India's ODI World Cup campaign in 2019, will once again be a central figure for the Chennai-based IPL franchise, as they look to win another campaign. CSK are one of the most successful T20 teams in the country with three IPL titles and two Champions League trophies but speculation around Dhoni's fitness is likely to cloud the headlines.
The former Indian captain, who led the Men in Blue to the ODI and T20 World Cup victories, has not played competitive cricket for a long period amidst widespread speculations that he will retire post the T20 domestic tournament in May. The likes of 1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly have stressed on how it was important to look for future stars in the upcoming IPL season instead of focusing on Dhoni's game with the T20 World Cup scheduled to take place later this year in Australia.
Nevertheless, Chennai Super Kings sent their fans into frenzy on Monday morning, when they released a video of Dhoni's arrival. Twitter had a meltdown with cricket fans across the country happy to see a seemingly-fit Dhoni back in the limelight after a few months of absence.
There is no question that Dhoni is on the decline with respect to his abilities but his cricketing brains will still be a huge advantage for CSK. He has arguably been the best white-ball captain in the recent years and his ability to read the game will be a big plus for the Chennai team. Dhoni will be expected tp play the role of an anchor in the middle for the team in yellow while the big hitting responsibilities can be shared by others in the team. The Indian Premier League will start on March 29 with Mumbai Indians playing host to the Chennai Super Kings.
