IPL 2020: Kai Po Che's 'boy wonder' Ali is now an actual cricketer with Mumbai Indians
Digvijay Deshmukh, who starred as Ali in Kai Po Che, is now a fast bowler for Mumbai Indians after he was picked up in the 2020 auctions in Kolkata for Rs 20 lakhs
Remember the cricket prodigy Ali Hashmi from the 2013 film Kai Po Che? The talented 14-year-old coached by Ishan (Sushant Singh) before everything goes haywire due to the riots in Gujarat? Well, if the Indian Premier League (IPL) goes ahead as 'rescheduled' then Ali might play a big role for the defending champions.
Yes, that is right. Digvijay Deshmukh, who starred as Ali in Kai Po Che, is now a fast bowler for Mumbai Indians after he was picked up in the 2020 auctions in Kolkata for Rs 20 lakhs. The Pune-based past bowler will be expected to play a role in the IPL especially the visa-related problems clouding the availability of foreign players for the world's most-watched T20 league.
Deshmukh, 21, played for Maharashtra in the 2019/20 season where he took 9 wickets (7 matches) in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He also featured in the state's Ranji Trophy campaign. Mumbai Indians have seasoned Indian internationals in the likes of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah who will also now help get the best out of young Deshmukh.
IPL's future is still in major doubt with the coronavirus spreading fast in the country. The league got postponed to April 15 from March 29 to help the organisers plan the event better while there are suggestions that the entire league will be played behind closed doors. According to Livemint, the cash-rich IPL may take a Rs 10,000-crore hit if it is called off which perhaps best explains the hesitancy shown by the BCCI in calling the tournament off.
With the T20 World Cup set to place in Australia later this year, the IPL was an important event for the national team selectors who would have liked the opportunity to assess the best white-ball cricketers in the country.
