Hit-and-run: Indian man gets 3 years in jail for killing elderly woman in Australia
Ratan Singh Sandip -- who has been living in Australia for five years -- pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing the death of 60-year-old Beth Eden.
An Indian man, who tried to flee Australia after fatally striking down a 60-year-old woman with his car while she was jogging on a footpath in Brisbane in 2018, has been jailed for three years.
Ratan Singh Sandip, 25, hit Beth Eden while she was jogging just 300 metres from her house in Mt. Warren Park, south of Brisbane in November 2018.
A court previously heard that within “seconds” of police telling Sindip he could be charged, he bought a one-way plane ticket to India via Dubai.
Sandip was intercepted by police at the Brisbane International Airport in January 2019 trying to board a flight out of the country, according to the Courier Mail. He was arrested at the airport and was granted bail.
In Beenleigh District Court on Tuesday, Sandip -- who has been living in Australia for five years -- pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing the death of Eden.
The elderly woman’s family members who were present at the hearing said they were grateful to the police for nabbing Sandip before he fled the country.
It was previously heard in court that Sandip only realised he hit Eden -- who was training for a marathon -- when he phoned Triple 0 after crashing into the fence.
“The defendant was on the phone to Triple-0 when he was alerted by a bystander that someone had been hit,” a police prosecutor said at the time.
“So that is how much attention he was paying to the road.”
Sandip has not applied for bail and will next appear in the court on February 6.
