Govinda, Govinda: The story behind Madurai’s famous Kalazhagar festival told with 360° VR video
Dive into a 360° Virtual Reality (VR) video experience of the famous Madurai Kalazhagar festival and listen to the story behind Lord Kallazhagar descent into Vaigai river during the annual Chithirai festival.
On the riverbanks of Vaigai in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, thousands of devotees gather to take a holy dip as Lord Kalazhagar bestows his blessings at the mandapam there.
The Kalazhagar festival is a part of the month-long Chithirai festival in the glorious temple city.
The story goes that Lord Azhagar, disguised as a ‘Kallar’ or ‘thief’ comes riding a magnificent gold horse to see the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi.
Lord Azhagar, an incarnation of the Hindu God Vishnu, is said to be the brother of Goddess Meenakshi—an incarnation of Shakti—who marries Lord Sundareswarar—an incarnation of Shiva—at the Meenakshi Amman temple in Madurai.
However, Lord Kalazhagar does not reach the wedding on time and gets furious.
Legend says that he hands over gifts to his sister and brother-in-law without crossing the Vaigai River into Madurai.
Every year, these acts are reenacted during the ‘Chithirai festival’ and devotees take a holy dip in the river to receive blessings from Lord Kalazhagar.
