A shorter IPL? Vaughan bats for a five-week tournament in September
Vaughan's suggestion also takes into consideration the challenges BCCI and Indian cricket administration will have to face if they were to host the tournament in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic
Michael Vaughan has called for shortened five-week Indian Premier League (IPL) leading up to the ICC World T20. The T20 tournament is seen as a platform to identify the best limited-overs cricketers across the world and the former England captain feels the sport can benefit from the competition being held before the World Cup starts in Australia (October to November).
My thoughts on the IPL .. as it’s such an important tournament for the games economy globally not just in India .. I would play a 5 week tournament Sept/Oct including all players as a warm up for the T20 WC .. that’s if we are clear to travel by then .. ???? Thoughts ? #Stayhome— Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) April 3, 2020
Vaughan's suggestion also takes into consideration the challenges BCCI and Indian cricket administration will have to face if they were to host the tournament in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
As of now, India has more than 2,000 positive cases with 50 deaths reported so far. India is currently under a 21-day lockdown while the global number of coronavirus cases have cross one millions.
The IPL was initially postponed till April 15 but there is very little chance of the event happening in the summer with the coronavirus cases spiking.
However if one goes by Vaughan’s suggestion, it would mean that he is expecting IPL in the September window in the lead up to the World T20 which begins in Australia on October 18.
In September, India is supposed to play the Asia Cup in the UAE which is going to be hosted by the Pakistan Cricket Board. After the Asia Cup, England is supposed to come to India to play three ODIs and three T20Is.
“September is the time when there is monsoon in India. Mumbai will be under water, there could be steady rain in Chennai. It is a decision that can’t be taken that lightly,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.
There is a suggestion to do away with the ICC World T20 in October-November and hand that slot to the BCCI for conducting of IPL but sources in ICC as well as BCCI feels that it’s too premature to comment at the moment.
“You don’t know the situation tomorrow. Let there be a sign that the curve is flattening and normalcy can return. That’s when you start discussing options,” the BCCI source said.
