FASTags to be compulsory on national highways: Everything you need to know
The central government has mandated that from mid-December, all private and commercial vehicles on National Highways should have FASTags. Here is everything you need to know.
Starting from December 15th, all private and commercial vehicles in India need to have FASTags to commute on national highways, the central government has said. The vehicles that enter FASTag lanes without FASTags will be charged double the user fee.
The prepaid tag, which is affixed to a vehicle's windscreen and enables deducting of toll charges, will be valid at 525 toll plazas across the country.
What are FASTags?
FASTags are rechargeable tags available in the form of prepaid stickers that can be stuck on the windscreen of the vehicle. Every time the vehicle crosses a toll plaza, the sensors at the toll plaza detects the FASTag sticker on the windscreen and the toll money is deducted from the linked FASTag account automatically.
There is no need to stop the vehicle at the toll plaza to get the toll ticket; this process will avoid the vehicle pile-ups at the highway toll booths. There is no expiry date for these FASTags, and they can be used as long as they are not worn out.
This program was first implemented on the Delhi-Mumbai highway and has now been expanded to cover 525 national highway toll plazas across the nation. State highways are expected to be covered soon.
Three ways to buy FASTags:
Documents required to get a Fastag are Registration Certificate (RC), passport size photograph and KYC documents. Here are three ways you can buy them.
Option 1: Banks
Initially, FASTag was available only atICICI bank, but now it is available at 22 certified banks across the nation that includes State Bank of India, HDFC, Axis Bank, and Syndicate Bank. The FASTag payment wallet will be linked to the bank account. So, you can check the balance/transactions online and the users will also be auto-notified through messages for every FASTag transaction.
Option 2: Toll Plazas
FASTags can also be purchased at the national highway toll plazas by submitting the required documents.
Option 3: Online
FASTags can be ordered online on digital platforms like Amazon and Paytm. Users need not worry if the FASTag is delivered to the wrong address because all the purchased FASTags need to be activated by the users.
How to activate FASTags?
There are 2 ways of activating FASTags; one is online and the other is offline. To do it online, users need to install the app called MYFastag. The app is available both on android and IOS platforms. Users just need to enter the RC number in the app and follow the onscreen instructions. Once the FASTag is activated, MYFastag app can be linked to a bank account. The tag can be recharged online.
To activate offline, walk into any of the certified banks. The bank will help you activate the FASTag and link it to the user’s bank account. Here is a list of certified banks:
