Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson announces release date for DCEU’s ‘Black Adam’
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been attached to play Black Adam for a long time, and following the success of Shazam! earlier this year, the Black Adam movie finally started accelerating down the developmental pipeline. So when can we expect to see Johnson finally bring this DC Comics character to life? We finally know the answer: December 22, 2021.
Finally it’s upon us. After years of rumours and waiting, we finally know that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s DC movie ‘Black Adam’ is happening. The Rock surprised everyone on Instagram by dropping the first look of the anti-hero, where he also shared his motivation for playing Black Adam, and the release date.
The Man in Black ⚡️ Like most kids growing up, I dreamed about being a superhero. Having cool superpowers, fighting for what’s right and always protecting the people. It all changed for me, when I was 10yrs old and was first introduced to the greatest superhero of all time - SUPERMAN. As a kid, Superman was the hero I always wanted to be. But, a few years into my fantasy, I realized that Superman was the hero, I could never be. I was too rebellious. Too rambunctious. Too resistant to convention and authority. Despite my troubles, I was still a good kid with a good heart - I just liked to do things my way. Now, years later as a man, with the same DNA I had as a kid - my superhero dreams have come true. I’m honored to join the iconic #DCUniverse and it’s a true pleasure to become, BLACK ADAM. BLACK ADAM is blessed by magic with the powers equal to SUPERMAN, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line. He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people - but he does it his way. Truth and justice - the BLACK ADAM way. This role is unlike any other I’ve ever played in my career and I’m grateful to the bone we’ll all go on this journey together. BLACK ADAM 12.22.21 ⚡️ Huge thank you to my friends, @jimlee and @bosslogic for this first time ever bad ass collaboration.

It is coming to our nearest theatres on December 12th, 2021 and will be connected to previous DCEU films like Shazam and Justice League.
The electrifying poster by DC Comics icon Jim Lee and fan-art extraordinaire BossLogic shows what Johnson would look like as Black Adam. He’s got the signature back and yellow costume and menacing eyes which reek of his anti-hero vibe. If we look closely we can also see that Black Adam is hovering over some ruins and a skeleton. That’s because this guy isn’t your typical superhero. If you couldn’t tell by the lighting costume, he’s the dark counterpoint to Shazam.
Remember, in the Shazam movie, they did hint at a previous champion that didn’t work out. That was Black Adam.
The original plan was for Black Adam to make his cinematic debut in the first Shazam! movie, where he and the World’s Mightiest Mortal would come to blows. However, it was later decided that Black Adam was an important enough character to warrant starring in his own movie first, and it remains to be seen when he and Shazam will cross paths in a film setting, though Zachary Levi suspects it won’t happen till Sahazm 3.
Black Adam is the third DC Comics movie that’s set for release in 2021. It’s being preceded by The Batman on June 25 and The Suicide Squad on August 6. As far as opening weekend competition goes, Black Adam opens one day after Hotel Transylvania 4, and the same day as Sherlock Holmes 3, Wicked and a yet-to-be-revealed live-action Disney movie. Black Adam also arrives just four days after Avatar 2 comes out.
