Ranveer-Deepika's '83 and other sports-based Bollywood movies you can't miss
After months of sneak peeks, fans finally got to see Deepika Padukone in a whole new avatar with Ranveer Singh in their upcoming movie, '83. Ahead, we list some other Bollywood films you can keep an eye out for that celebrate the spirit of sports.
Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone will be coming together for the first time since their 2018 wedding, with Kabir Khan's '83. If you follow Singh on social media, you've likely already seen several sneak peeks of the actor in his latest avatar: dressed in Team India's cardigan on the pitch, Singh makes a convincing Kapil Dev, and cricket fans everywhere seem to agree. What fans have not had a chance to see yet, however, is actress Deepika Padukone's look for the movie. Fast forward to Wednesday, when they saw Padukone's first look as Kapil Dev's wife, Romi Dev. Among the first to share the snapshot was Singh himself, who posted the movie still saying, "The Wind beneath my Wings ❤ The Heart of the Hurricane." Within minutes of hitting the internet, the sweet first look of the star couple earned lakhs of likes and comments. While Singh smiles at Padukone in a sharp suit, she paints a striking image of Romi Dev with her shaggy bob hairstyle. Check out Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone's new picture here:
Following Ranveer Singh's post, Deepika Padukone also took to her official Instagram account to share her first look from '83 and revealed more details about her appearance in the movie. "To be able to play a small part in a film that captures one of the most iconic moments in sporting history has been an absolute honour," Padukone shared. "I've seen very closely the role a wife plays in the success of her husband’s professional and personal aspirations in my mother and '83 for me in many ways is an ode to every woman who puts her husband’s dream before her own." Can't wait to see Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh come together once again on the big screen? The wait is almost over. '83 hits theatres on April 10, 2020. But '83 is not the only sports-based Bollywood movie you should be watching out for. From boxing to badminton, Hindi cinema will be offering something for every sports fan in the near future. Ahead, we list some upcoming films you can keep an eye out for that celebrate the spirit of sports.
For the past couple of months, fans have seen actress Parineeti Chopra posting images of her badminton training sessions on social media. If you didn’t already know why, it’s because the star is prepping to play Saina Nehwal in the badminton champ’s upcoming biopic. “Everything from how Saina plays, who she has played with and against, every match she has been in has been documented, it’s important to imbibe all that information and present it on screen. I’m happy, but also very nervous,” Chopra shared in an earlier interview. Directed by Amole Gupte, the film has been in the making for a long time, with actress Shraddha Kapoor being announced as the protagonist first, only to be replaced by Chopra because of scheduling conflicts. Actor Manav Kaul will be seen essaying the role of Nehwal’s coach, Pullela Gopichand. The film is expected to be released in 2020.
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Farhan Akhtar seem to make a winning team. After working together for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013), the filmmaker and actor are now coming back together for Toofan, a fictional story of a boxer. While the first look of the film came out in September 2019, the filming of Toofan began in August 2019. Although not much is known about the film at this stage, Mehra has been quoted as saying that the movie is a “beautiful, heartfelt story... a love story that happens to be about a boxer”. The film will also star actor Paresh Rawal and actress Mrunal Thakur in prominent roles and is set to release this year, on October 2.
After playing one of the world’s oldest sharpshooters in Saand Ki Aankh, actress Taapsee Pannu will soon be seen in the role of an athlete in this Akarsh Khurana directorial. But unlike the former, which is a biopic, this one is a fictional story set in Gujarat. The 21-second motion poster unveiled on August 30 shows Pannu dressed in a red kurta set with a traditional nose pin, racing ahead and transforming into a professional athlete avatar on the race track. The film is being produced by Ronnie Screwvala and is expected to be released this year.
The untitled Abhinav Bindra biopic
Indian Olympic sharpshooter Abhinav Bindra’s autobiography, A Shot at History: My Obsessive Journey to Olympic Gold, is being turned into a biopic by director Kannan Iyer and co-writer Abhay Khurana. After many delays and rumours of the film being shelved, the Harshvardhan Kapoor-starrer is now confirmed for release, although the date has not been announced yet. The biopic will also see the actor’s father, Anil Kapoor, play the role of Bindra’s father, Apjit Bindra. On Sunday, actress Sonam Kapoor confirmed the shooting of Abhinav Bindra's biopic with a picture of the ace shooter with her brother Harshvardhan Kapoor and father Anil Kapoor.
