Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh can’t stop wearing this trend
Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh can't seem to stop wearing neon. To be more specific, they can't stop wearing varying shades of neon green. Think the eye-popping colour isn’t for you? These looks might make you think again.
There are two types of colour trends dominating fashion right now: beige and, well, anything that's neon. There's no in-between. You're either keeping it minimal or trying to blind everyone. We're here to talk about the latter and how to wear it in 2019. Neon – particularly neon green – is shaping up to be the must-try trend of the season. The fashion trend has been championed by many celebs in recent months. But, we've witnessed Gully Boy actor Ranveer Singh become the unofficial spokesperson for fluorescent green tracksuits, while his wife, actress Deepika Padukone, has been offering a tongue-in-cheek crash course in how to style eye-catching head-to-toe outfits in the colour. It seems like no matter the place, be it a red carpet event or the airport, Deepika and Ranveer are smitten with the eccentric hue.
Neon clothing will always turn heads, but there are more subtle, yet fun ways to style it – from blending with muted tones to opting for simple accessories. Away from Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone’s over-the-top looks, the stylish couple also offers up some relatively straightforward advice for making the eye-popping colour work in real life: For a smaller dose of colour, just reach for an accessory in the highlighter hue. So, don't worry: Not every outfit we're about to show you is doused in neon green. Some looks integrate the trend in a more subtle way, while others really do smack you right in the face. If you feel that this trend is a little too much, we are bringing you some of Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s looks that made us feel like it was our time to try out the 2019 trend for ourselves; we hope you feel the same way and keep on scrolling for all the neon inspiration you could need.
Here are five ways to wear neon as well as Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh:
For her appearance on the red carpet of the 72nd edition of the Cannes Film Festival in May, not only did Deepika Padukone go with the current celebrity favourite, neon green, but did it in spectacular fashion. For some, dressing for Cannes is about hitting every item on a checklist. Big dress? Check. Bigger jewels? Check. While that’s one way to get attention, seasoned attendees, like Deepika – she was on her fourth trip to the annual gala – elevate the fashion quotient by mixing things up. Deepika wore two neon looks at Cannes 2019, one on the red carpet, and the other off it. For a photoshoot, she wore a neon green and black ball gown from Off-White’s spring 2019 collection. Paired with black sneakers and matching black and green sunglasses, it was a cool girl’s take on evening-wear. Deepika showed that neon can not only look seriously glamorous, but also that when paired with simple, sporty accessories, it isn't as out-there as you might expect. Lived-in wavy hair and a rose-pink lipstick completed Deepika’s first neon look at Cannes 2019.

After rocking an elegant black and white Dundas gown at her first red carpet outing at Cannes 2019, for her final appearance, at the premiere of Pedro Almodóvar's film Pain and Glory, Deepika Padukone, pulled out all the stops in a massive tulle Giambattista Valli Couture gown. It featured long ruffled sleeves, as well as a bow at the collar and a belted waist. The layered high-low skirt on the dress was a total masterpiece, with the mile-long train adding some extra drama with each step she took. But, of course, Deepika added her own twist to this already-wild look: If you’re going to go for a grandiose Cannes look, it might as well be neon and include a turban, right? In her light pink Emily London turban, Stuart Weitzman sandals, and Lorraine Schwartz jewels, Deepika was a princess with a look no one could compete with. The photos above say it all.

Deepika Padukone isn't afraid to take risks when it comes to fashion, and she proved that once again when she stepped out in head-to-toe neon green at the Mumbai airport in June. The actress and producer was unmissable in a neon jacket by designer label Off-White, worn with matching track pants and a white tank top. Deepika Padukone’s airport outfit wasn’t just interesting to look at, it was super comfortable too. The actor wore her roomy separates with white sneakers (a quintessential travel wardrobe must-have), a pair of black sunglasses, and a classic Chanel quilted bag. This is the easiest way to wear neon – pairing a white T-shirt and white sneakers with fluorescent separates. Deepika’s complete look was so impactful that it had many fans wondering if it was inspired by her husband Ranveer Singh, who loves experimenting with crazy colours and eccentric ensemble, especially at the airport.
Speaking of Ranveer Singh, at the Gully Boy music launch in Mumbai in January, the actor was difficult to miss in his neon and metallic look. His larger-than-life ensemble comprised of an oversized metallic puffer jacket and an all-neon tracksuit. A pair of light blue sneakers and sunglasses with thick red rims added even more drama to his statement-making look. Ranveer’s blindingly blingy jacket was by Adidas, while his sporty tracksuit was from designer label Noughtone’s spring/summer 2019 collection. The star pulled off this maximalist look in a way that only he could, as he met his fans and belted out lines from his favourite Gully Boy tracks on stage. So, if like Ranveer Singh, you are a true maximalist, don't be afraid of mixing neon with other textures, prints, and fabrics, such as metallics.
If subtlety isn't your thing, wear a neon suit, à la Ranveer Singh, who made a strong case for it with his fluorescent green Dior suit that he wore for an awards ceremony in March. The double-breasted, relaxed fit is just what you should wear to your next big brunch party. Or even for your best friend’s daytime wedding. You can pair the suit with your chunkiest white kicks or even slick black shoes, depending on the occasion. In terms of accessories, you can throw on these rad pair of sunglasses that Ranveer Singh was sporting to take your look from quirky to avant-garde. And you could either pair a solid T-shirt inside the blazer like Ranveer Singh has done with his classic white or just go for a muted vest. All we’re saying is it doesn’t hurt to be a little experimental with your sartorial sense.
