Deepika Padukone is having quite an exciting year. Between adjusting to married life with actor Ranveer Singh, following their series of wedding celebrations in November 2018, and shooting multiple films — ’83, a drama about the Indian cricket team’s victory at the 1983 World Cup, where she stars opposite Ranveer, and plays the wife of former India captain Kapil Dev, and Meghna Gulzar's Chhapaak, a biopic based on the life of acid-attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, which also marks Padukone’s first credit as producer — the 33-year-old actress has been busy.

In the latest fall 2019 digital cover for Harper's Bazaar US, Deepika Padukone delves into her relationship with Ranveer, as their one-year wedding anniversary approaches. The stunning couple jet-set all the way to Lake Como for their two separate wedding ceremonies: a Konkani one, followed by an Anand Karaj ceremony. Once the happy couple returned from Italy, they hosted three wedding receptions: one in Bengaluru, where Padukone is from, and two more in Mumbai. In the Harper's Bazaar cover interview, Padukone also opens up about building her career and her desire to make a positive difference in the world. Perhaps her most honest moment is when she explains how she wasn’t aware of what mental illness was before being diagnosed with depression and anxiety in 2014.
Read on for some of Deepika Padukone's standout quotes — including sweet tidbits about Ranveer Singh and their marriage — from the interview. We've also rounded up every single dress (yes, every single one) that the actress has graced us with in the Harper's Bazaar US spread. In the photos, she looks confident and sexy. On her childhood and how she envisions starting her own family:
“Athletes are constantly travelling, and when you see their success, not often do you also see the kinds of sacrifices their family makes. But I’ve seen it so closely... My sister and I had two working parents who were still able to give every aspect of their lives, time, and dignity, whether it’s work or being home with us. I really hope that when Ranveer and I start a family, we’re able to do it the way I experienced it as a child with my parents. Just rooted, and wholesome, and secure.”
“If there’s one thing I’ve always relied on, it’s my instincts,” says @deepikapadukone in her BAZAAR.com digital cover story. Tap the link in bio to read and see the full fashion shoot. On becoming one of Bollywood’s most sought-after actresses almost overnight after Om Shanti Om:
“To be cast in such a mammoth movie with absolutely no film experience, without auditioning, without any of the usual checks that you go through before being cast in a big film, that was surreal. It saved me many years of having to prove myself, but it also meant I had to go through a slump, in a way, just to learn the craft, to learn the mechanics. It took me a while to get to where I am now, which is a place of confidence, of comfort, of familiarity.”

On struggling post her blockbuster Bollywood debut:
“I made some wrong choices — none of which I regret. It took some amount of, I’d say, ‘unsuccessful’ experiences to get here... But I’m in a place today where I trust my instincts, and I don’t think I would be if I hadn’t been through those experiences.”
Goth romance. Loved styling the latest digital cover shoot for @harpersbazaarus starring @deepikapadukone and photographed by @david_roemer — I spend so much of my time looking at ivory, pastels, and florals but this time, @kerrypieri and @joyann_king let me play with all black, deep red, and chain mail gloves. ???? On struggling with depression and anxiety in 2014:
“I wasn’t aware of what mental illness was, and I didn’t realise the importance of mental health... When we have a fever, we know what the symptoms are. Why aren’t we taught to recognise the symptoms of mental illness in the same way? It was a lack of awareness on my part, but also on the part of the people around me. What if it wasn’t for my mother [Ujjala Padukone]? Who else would have helped me? I had to deal with stigma on my journey to recovery... Everyone, including me, was keeping it all so hushed. When people asked me how I was feeling, why did I always lie and say I was okay? I don’t think I’d be here today if it wasn’t for my mother.”
While you were sleeping, @deepikapadukone became the most famous woman in the world. On women feeling guilty about self-care:
"I realised the importance of self-care, and when I do it, I do it without guilt. I think women especially have a tendency of doing it with a lot of guilt attached.”

On waiting until after the wedding to live together with Ranveer Singh:
“There was a lot of temptation to move away from the traditional, especially for the two of us, who are constantly travelling, but it was important to me... Ranveer has always been okay with whatever. He’s always said, ‘Whatever makes you happy makes me happy.’ But for me, it’s about wanting to do everything at the right time. It’s how I saw my parents do it, so I didn’t know any other way.... If we had started living together earlier, then what would we be discovering later on? That’s what this year [the stars celebrate their first wedding anniversary on November 14] has been — living together and discovering each other. I like to say we made the best decision of our lives. I know people are cynical about marriage, but that hasn’t been our experience. We believe in the institution, and we’re enjoying every bit of it.”
On her upcoming release, Chhapaak:
“This is the kind of voice I want to have as an actor and as a producer... This has been my toughest film to date. Working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali,” she says, “I always felt like it couldn't get tougher than that. And then Chhapaak happened.”
