Pranesh Prakash from The Centre of Internet and Society talks about the Data Protection Bill and privacy concerns in this podcast.
India's privacy law is close to becoming a reality as the Data Protection Bill awaits Parliament's nod.
In 2017, in the backdrop of Aadhaar leaks and controversies, and allegations of Facebook collecting users data, the government constituted the BN Srikrishna committee. The 10-member committee was tasked with studying and identifying key data protection issues and recommend methods for addressing them. The committee submitted the draft of the Data Protection Bill last year, which is likely to be taken up in the next session of the Parliament.
But will it address the privacy concerns in India? Can the political parties -- which seem seem earger to utilise voters' data to know their voting pattern -- be trusted to bring strong legislation?
In this podcast, we talk to our expert Pranesh Prakash from the Centre of Internet and Society about this bill and its implications.
