The basement of a civic hospital in Gujarat’s Surat which was converted into a COVID care facility housing 65 patients was flooded after an underground watertank overflowed to the facility, an official said on Sunday.
The incident took place late on Saturday night. According to officials, the water was flushed out soon after it was reported. However, it didn’t take much time for the videos of the flooded facility to surface on social media platforms and soon they went viral.
Surat Municipal Corporation Deputy Commissioner (Health), Dr Ashish Naik, confirmed there were 65 coronavirus positive patients at the facility set up in the multi-level parking of SMIMER Hospital.
"Water from an underground tank overflowed and flooded the basement briefly. The water was flushed out and the issue resolved within half an hour," Naik said.
Meanwhile, the incident has given ammunition to the opposition parties to attack the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda shared the video of the flooded COVID facility to attack the Rupani government over what he claimed was the "fake Gujarat model". He also questioned Gujarat Health Minister Nitin Patel over preparations to contain the COVID outbreak.
"See the condition of ward for patients of Covid-19 in BJP-ruled Surat Municipal Corporation hospital in Narendra Modi's Fake Gujarat Model,” the Gujarat Congress president said in a tweet. He further questioned CM Rupani and Health Minister Patel, “please tell us, was this your preparation to defeat Covid-19?"
