Cong, Samajwadi Party say migrants death in Auraiya accident is a 'murder'
On Saturday, 24 migrant workers died in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi has urged the state government to allow her party to ply 1,000 buses to ferry the migrant workers back to their homes safely.
On Saturday, the country woke up to more tragic news of migrant workers dying in an accident while they return to their homes from around the country. In Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya, 24 migrant workers died in a road accident. The workers from states such as UP, Bihar, and Jharkhand were en route to their homes.
The deaths of migrants has attracted a fierce response from the regional units of the opposition parties. The Congress’s UP unit and the Samajwadi Party has hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government.
Both parties have termed the death of 24 migrant workers in Auraiya as "murder". The UP Congress accused the state government of being insensitive towards the plight of migrant workers and demanded Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's resignation over the incident.
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in a letter to CM Adityanath, has said that nearly 65 migrant workers have died in road accidents during the COVID-19 lockdown. She has urged the state government to allow the Congress party to ply 1,000 buses to ferry the migrant workers back to their homes.
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, targetting the BJP government, said, "Let's see for how long those heartless people and their supporters would justify this negligence despite knowing everything. These are not deaths but murders."
In a tweet, he also announced that his party would give Rs 1 lakh to the family of each of the deceased and urged the state government to provide Rs 10 lakh compensation to each family.
"The pitiless BJP government must take moral responsibility, and provide Rs 10 lakh to each of the family of the deceased," Yadav said.

Meanwhile, the BSP chief Mayawati has asked all parties to rise above petty politics and ensure the safety of migrants trying to return home amid the lockdown.
"The BJP and Congress are levelling charges against each other. Congress governments in states should take care of this issue in their states,” the BSP chief said in a statement. “Be it the Congress or BJP government they should send migrants home safely. But they are not paying attention to it."
At least 24 migrants were killed and 36 injured when a trailer rammed into a stationary truck, both carrying passengers, on a highway near Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh in the early hours of Saturday.
Some of the migrants coming from Delhi had stopped for tea when the accident occurred between 3 am and 3.30 am on the Auraiya-Kanpur Dehat stretch of National Highway 19, police said.
Most of those killed were from Jharkhand and West Bengal, and some from Kushinagar in eastern Uttar Pradesh, officials said.
