Mayawati seeks action against those involved in assault of Dalits in Guna
"To force a couple to attempt suicide by damaging their crop sown by taking debt with the help of JCB machine, in the name of encroachment, is most cruel and shameful," BSP chief Mayawati said, while attacking the BJP government.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati termed the attack on Dalits in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna as "cruel and shameful". On Thursday, she further alleged that Dalits are being "uprooted" under the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) regime as they were during the Congress rule.
A purported video of the incident being circulated on social media platforms showed the police hitting a Dalit man mercilessly with batons while his wife and others were struggling to save him. The incident reportedly took place in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district.
The government officials later said that the (farm) land was reserved for a government model college. Rajkumar Ahirwar, 38, and his wife Savitri, 35, were working on the land.
When officials asked them to vacate the field, they drank pesticide in protest at the behest of those who had encroached on the land, they claimed.
The incident of the alleged police crackdown on the couple has already triggered a nationwide outrage. Political parties such as BSP and the Congress are attacking the BJP for the incident.
In a tweet, the BSP supremo said, "To force a couple to attempt suicide by damaging their crop sown by taking debt with the help of JCB machine, in the name of encroachment, is most cruel and shameful. Nationwide condemnation of the incident is natural.”
Mayawati urged the government to take strict action against those behind the alleged attack on the Dalit couple.
The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister also attacked the BJP and asked the Dalits to stay wary of the saffron party.
— Mayawati (@Mayawati) July 16, 2020
"On the one hand, the BJP and its government blows its trumpet on settling Dalits, while on the other hand, incidents of uprooting them are as common as they were during the Congress rule, then what is the difference between the two? Dalits should specially think about this," the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said.
Meanwhile, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi had shared the video of the incident saying, “Our fight is against this thinking and injustice.”
