Blanket ban on apps like TikTok often arises from social panic: Internet rights lawyer Apar Gupta
An interim ban on TikTok was lifted on April 24 by the Madras HC. In a digitised India where internet penetration is increasing, how effective are blanket bans on applications that have gained popularity among young in a short period of time?
Asiaville spoke to Apar Gupta, Lawyer and Executive Director of Internet Freedom Foundation on the interim ban that was lifted on TikTok. He said, "Bans are often ineffective ways in dealing with social issues. Complete prohibition also shows lack of patience to engage in addressing a problem." He added that there is a need to introduce concepts of adolescent health, mental health and dealing with cyber bullying to help the younger generation adapt to a digitzed India.
