Barack Obama’s 7 almonds a night – and other favourite foods celebrities enjoy
Whilst it’s true that many celebrities enjoy the perks of having their own private chefs who can whip up anything they fancy in their glamorous kitchens, sometimes what they really crave is what everyone else craves too, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that food is one of our great unifiers.
In 2016 the New York Times reported that President Barack Obama ate exactly seven lightly salted almonds as a late-night snack. The article said:
To stay awake, the president does not turn to caffeine. He rarely drinks coffee or tea, and more often has a bottle of water next to him than a soda. His friends say his only snack at night is seven lightly salted almonds.
“Michelle and I would always joke: Not six. Not eight,” Mr Kass said. “Always seven almonds.”
After the article came out, people lost their minds because it seemed like a bizarre habit. Why not eight almonds, people asked? Why not ten? Why not go nuts and eat a handful? Everyone became so obsessed with the American President’s snacking habits that he was forced to set the record straight, clarifying that it had been a joke. “This is an example of the weird way that the press works,” said President Obama, as he went on to explain. “So, Michelle [Obama] and Sam Kass, who was our chef here, one night they were talking about me and teasing me about how disciplined I was, that I didn’t have potato chips or I didn’t have a piece of cake. And this is when Michelle said: ‘Yes, and he just has seven almonds. That’s it.’ To really drive home the point that I needed to loosen up a little bit. And Sam relayed this joke to the New York Times in the article and somehow it was relayed as if I was counting out the seven almonds.”
In reality, former President Obama has a huge fondness for junk food, particularly tortilla chips and guacamole. When a bowl is in sight, “he loses it”, former first lady Michelle Obama said. “I lose my mind,” Obama responded. “I lose my mind!”
President Obama isn’t the only one with a fondness for junk food. When I began researching this piece, I was surprised at just how many celebrities seemed to enjoy the not so occasional binge. Whilst it’s true that many celebrities enjoy the perks of having their own private chefs who can whip up anything they fancy in their glamorous kitchens, sometimes what they really crave is what everyone else craves too, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that food is one of our great unifiers. As I dug deeper, I began to relate more and more to celebrities I was convinced I had nothing in common with.
Harry Potter’s Emma Watson loves digging into egg tortillas, which are apparently her go-to food to cook when she’s at home. If you want to recreate it, just combine scrambled eggs, salsa, and guacamole in the tortilla, and voila. Egg tortillas.
The Beeb’s favourite food is none other than spaghetti bolognese, which consists of spaghetti served with a sauce made from tomatoes, minced beef, garlic, wine, and herbs; sometimes minced beef can be replaced by other minced meats. Want to make your own? Try this recipe.
The gorgeous supermodel loves nothing better than digging into a big juicy burger. In fact, she apparently eats so many burgers that she’s considered quite a connoisseur of the dish, especially in New York City, where she lives. When she recently changed her mind about her favourite burger brand in New York City, it made headline news.
Kendall Jenner is another supermodel who is not shy about her love for all things big and burger. According to her website, she also loves pizza and pancakes! Want a good pancake recipe to try? You can’t go wrong with this one.
The academy award-winning actress can’t get enough of French fries, although she also clarified that she loves Brussels sprouts. Obviously, though, she doesn’t eat them together at the same time. Here’s one of my favourite recipes for thrice-cooked fries.
Singer Taylor Swift loves to bake whenever she can, and, naturally, her favourite food is cookies. Whilst I’m not sure what kind of cookies Taylor prefers, here’s a recipe for one of my favourites.
The Gossip Girl actress is a girl after my own heart because melted cheese is her favourite food ever. (I have long espoused that melted cheese needs to be a food group on its own.) She likes to tuck into eggs Benedict when she goes out for brunch, and her favourite dessert is chocolate soufflé. Want to make eggs Benedict at home? Try this recipe. If you’re a vegetarian, like me, you can still enjoy eggs Benedict. This is the recipe I use when I make it at home.
Singer Selena Gomez has a wide variety of favourite foods she likes to snack on, including pickles, Hot Cheetos, and chocolate. Want to try Hot Cheetos like your fave? Look no further.
Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge
The Duchess is a huge fan of sticky toffee pudding – and who can blame her? Her favourite version is served at the Old Boot Inn, which is near her hometown where she grew up. Here’s the recipe.
