Babies born in space won’t be like other humans
The size of the head and the skin colour is going to be different from the babies who are born on earth.
Yes, if humans get off the earth and manage to give birth to a child in space or any other planet, the child won't be like the babies that we see on our home planet. Scott Solomon, evolutionary biologist says that children will have larger heads in comparison.
As we know, the force of gravity is very less outside the atmosphere of the earth. This will cause many difficulties while giving birth to a child in space. Generally, when a childbirth occurs on earth, barring complications with the pregnancy, operations are unnecessary. However, as there is no gravitational force in space, the baby will be born by c-section.
This, however, is going to change the shape of the head of the baby. Why? Because the shape of the head of a baby depends on the size of the mother’s birth canal. And since most of the babies will be born via c-section, in a space where there is a lack of gravity, the shape of the babies’ heads are going to be different from the babies born on earth.
Not only the size of the head, but the children will eventually see other physical changes too. In a talk to Business Insider, Solomon says that skin colour is also expected to change. The reason being, since there is no protection from cosmic radiation in space, the skin of children will evolve, leading to a change in colour. These new pigments might change the colour of the skin.
You might be wondering about the colour of the skin we will evolve to? Solomon says that melanin is a pigment that protects us from radiation like cosmic and ultraviolet rays. As there is no atmospheric protection from these radiations, more melanin will be required to protect them from these radiations. It will eventually lead to children being darker in colour, as melanin is responsible for making our skin darker. But, this change is going to be really slow and it might take centuries or millennia.
If the colour and shape of a baby are going to be different, they can be considered a different species as compared to the children born on earth.
There are start-ups that are planning to facilitate the birth of the first child in space.
Giving birth in space comes with a host of problems including the effect on the physique of people born in space. Astronauts living in space face a lot of health problems once they return to the earth. To know more about how the human body is affected in space read this article.
