Arshad Warsi: The actor who made comic sidekicks look cool
From 'Munnabhai' to 'Dhamaal' to 'Golmaal', Arshad Warsi has made comic sidekicks look cool on screen with his comic timing and impeccable performance.
Choreographer-turned-actor Arshad Warsi is well known for his comic timing. However, Warsi started off his acting career as a lead actor, playing both romantic and comic characters. He made his debut with the 1996 film Tere Mere Sapne and then went on to act in films like Betaabi, Hero Hindustani and Hogi Pyaar Ki Jeet. Most of these films did not do well at the box-office.
Arshad Warsi got his credit as an actor only with the 2003 film Munnabhai MBBS, where he played Sanjay Dutt’s sidekick Circuit. His character and pairing with Sanjay Dutt soon became the talk of the town. Consequently, he was offered more and more films in the comedy genre and went on to be a part of several comic franchise films including Golmaal and Dhamaal.
Munnabhai MBBS was the turning point of Arshad Warsi’s career. He played the role of the sidekick of a well-known goon in Mumbai. His accent and style was distinct, which made his performance stand out. His look from the film was also imitated by several people later on. The second installment of the film that was released in the year 2006, was not as well received as the first one, but Warsi’s character went on to be loved by all.
After Munnabhai, he was cast in Priyadarshan’s Hulchul that released in 2004. He did not have much screen time but dominated the screen in all his scenes. The movie got him several nominations for the Best Actor in a comic role. He went on to win big for his role in Lage Raho Munnabhai and then in Jolly LLB.
Even though Warsi has mostly done comedy films, the actor has never been stereotyped as a comic actor and had the opportunity to play serious characters as well. He has done a commendable job in films like Dedh Ishqiya, Sehar, Jolly LLB and Zilla Ghaziabad.
In an interview with Sunday Guardian, while talking about breaking labels, the actor said, “If you ask me about breaking labels, I would say that I don’t care anymore. I don’t need to prove anything to anyone. The day I get a good serious film, I will do it. But I won’t do it for the sake of it. I don’t need to prove to anyone that I can act. I am a very confident actor.”
Arshad Warsi does not come across as insecure, because of all the multi-starrer films the actor has been part of. Warsi definitely is an underrated actor and he wears that label proudly. In an interview, the actor said, “It is a very big compliment for me. It means that people have seen so much in me and they still feel that they can see more. So there is a lot more potential in me that has not been tapped.”
Arshad Warsi’s latest films like Bhaiyyaji Superhit and Fraud Saiyyan, however, bombed at the box-office and went away quite unnoticed. The actor is currently working on a serious role in a web series called Asura.
