WATCH: Andre 'Muscle Rusell' teaches the art of big hitting
In a video released by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Andre (the giant sixes) can be seen sharing some tips for hitting big at Mohali where KKR was holding a training camp.
With IPL 2020 just a couple of weeks away, it seems like KKR is all 'taiyaar' to start their campaign with a bang. And there can't possibly be a better knight to talk about the 'bang' than Dre Russ himself.
In a video released by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Andre of the giant sixes fame can be seen sharing some tips for hitting big at Mohali where KKR was holding a training camp.
Master of mammoth sixes, Russell reveals that he grips the bat with his hands at some distance from each other. With this, he is able to control the entire length of the blade when he swinging in his arc. "I allow the bat to be flexible in my hands, then I get a good base (while taking the stance), then make my body still. I don't move or anything. I stay as still as I can. And once I'm still it's just hand and eye coordination," says Russell explaining his process of batting.
Speaking on the mindset behind his carnage in the death overs, Russell said, "when you have 50-60 runs to get in 3 overs, there is only one mindset, that is to get the bat to the ball and hit as many sixes as you can. Because sixes make a difference. If you hit a four, you are two runs short."
Russell also spoke about how his strength allows him to hit those sixes which look impossible for any other human being. "I focus a lot on improving my strength, especially the core and the shoulders. Even when in my room, I'm doing sit-ups and push ups. I'm just a freak when it comes to strength," said a candid Russell.
He also emphasised on freeling up his arc to any ball for a giant six. "If I clear my front leg, I have the freedom to do anything that I want. This prevents me from being restricted to playing only a certain kind of shot. It's the arc where I get most of my power from," said Russell while looking prepared for KKR's campaign.
Andre Russell has been one of the mainstays from KKR over the years, with some impossible innings last season when he almost took his team to the playoffs singlehandedly.
Russell recently hit six sixes in a blistering 14-ball innings as West Indies smashed their way to a seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka to seal the two-match T20 International series on Friday.
