Amazon’s StyleSnap helps users shop using AI
All a user will have to do is click on a camera icon in the corner of the Alexa App and submit their requests. Amazon is said to rely on deep-learning technology to distinguish between patterns, styles, and colours and provides details of brand, price range, and customer reviews.
Amazon’s StyleSnap is the company’s latest feature for shopping using artificial intelligence. In its core, this tool will make it easier for you to replicate an outfit you’ve seen on social media or a magazine.
Announced at #reMARS, StyleSnap, an AI-powered feature, helps customers shop for clothing and accessories. All you need to do is take a photograph or screenshot of a look that you like. https://t.co/I7qfYWwlB5— Amazon News (@amazonnews) June 5, 2019
Amazon’s venture in apparel has not entirely been successful, particularly for women. Of the 10 worst performing Amazon private labels in any category, nine were women's or girls clothing, and 82 percent of its women’s clothing lines sold at most 100 units per month, according to research from Amazon seller data platform Jungle Scout. On the contrary, the research found that the company sells three times more men’s apparel than women’s per month.
On June 5, Amazon held its first re:Mars (machine learning, automation, robotics, and space) 2019 conference. The tech-giant called its attendees--comprising of business leaders, scientists and researchers--“dreamers and builders” and it advertised itself with its own AI credentials.
Amazon claims StyleSnap will use AI to help its customers improve their shopping experience. Users can upload a picture for which they will receive recommendations for similar items on the platform. StyleSnap will also provide details of brand, price range, and customer reviews.
Amazon’s Consumer Worldwide CEO Jeff Wilke said, “When a customer uploads an image, we use deep learning for object detection to identify the various apparel items in the image and categorize them into classes like dresses or shirts. We then find the most similar items that are available on Amazon.”
This is not the first time Amazon is introducing AI for shopping. Two years ago, the retailer introduced the Echo Look, a connected camera that combines human and machine intelligence to recommend styles.
StyleSnap seems geared towards Amazon's Influencer Program, which lets high-profile Instagrammers and bloggers earn by recommending Amazon items. Business Insider reported that some receive a commission as high as ten percent for items they recommend from the company's private fashion line.
The upcoming tool StyleSnap will be introduced for the Alexa application but there has been no information on its availability. It will first be launched to select users on iOS and Android in April 2020.
