Reports: Ajit Pawar resigns as the Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister
According to reports Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar resigns just 3 days after swearing-in.
In another dramatic turn of events rebel Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and current Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has resigned from his post, according to ANI and some local media reports. This comes just hours after the Supreme Court ordered completion of the Maharashtra floor test by Wednesday. According to local media, Ajit Pawar's resignation after 3 days in power, comes ahead of a press conference which the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is likely to address at 3.30 PM. It is possible that this announcement will be made official then.
Earlier Ajit Pawar had stunned the NCP by engineering an alliance and a midnight coup with the BJP leading to Devendra Fadnavis' return to power. NCP had touted the move as Ajit's own decision and stated that he lacks the support of NCP MLAs which he claims to have. This was followed by days of political drama, in which all the parties resorted to resort politics and went to the Supreme Court. NCP-Shiv Sena-Congress alliance claimed that they have the numbers to form the government, while BJP backed by Pawar said that they are confident of proving their majority in a floor test. But the Supreme Court's order of an immediate floor test changed the political game significantly. The likely resignation of Ajit Pawar seems to be the first significant effect of that order.
Sources suggest that even Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Shah and a senior BJP leader met at the parilamnet to discuss the Maharashtra situation following the Supreme Court order. Some are suggesting that Pawar's decision to reisgn comes on the back of that meeting. On the other hand some are saying that it's Ajit Pawar's failure to lure NCP MLAs to join hands with BJP, which led to this decision. But the picture is expected to get clearer only after Fadnavis' press conference.
