Agra prison gets radio station run by inmates
Officials say the radio would help inmates think positive. It comes on the heels of Kerala jails delivering food through online apps.
Agra Prison in Uttar Pradesh, in a first of its kind, has set up a radio station inside the jail to ease the plight of inmates.
"We have seen in the movies prison inmates being tortured by prison officials; inmates are lonely, depressed, and often violent," says a prison officer. Agra Prison officials set up the radio station to maintain the psychological well-being of inmates.
It is worth noting that the radio station is run entirely by inmates. Prison officials said the radio station would be a good opportunity for them to show off their skills.
Senior Superintendent of Police Bablu Kumar said, “This initiative should help create a happy and peaceful atmosphere in the jail. The radio is good entertainment for prison inmates. It will feature health shows, devotional songs and film songs. Prisoners are likely to feel less stress. It will help the prisoners get rid of negative thoughts and think positive."
Speakers have been placed throughout the prison complex to broadcast the programmes.
