Increasing age gap between Bollywood actors an issue? Make it a plot line
Filmmakers are looking at topics closer to home as they make movies addressing the age difference between lead actors. In Sanjay Leela Bhansali's next film, Salman Khan will be seen opposite Alia Bhatt.
Several articles have pointed out the increasing age gap between the lead actor and actress in Bollywood. Actors who dominated the silver screen from the 90s are still holding their title of the lead hero. Actors like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Ajay Devgn are seen romancing people nearly half their age.
Meanwhile, actresses who dominated the silver screen in the 90s are made to play older characters and are never seen romancing actors younger than them.
Now filmmakers have started making movies around this topic.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali had recently announced his next venture with Salman Khan and Alia Bhatt, titled Inshallah.
Salman Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali last made the film Hum Saath Saath Hai, which was released in the year 1999. Alia Bhatt was six-years-old at the time. While announcing the film, Alia Bhatt tweeted, "I was 9 when I first walked into Sanjay Leela Bhansali's office, all nervous and hoping and praying that I would be in his next film. It's been a long wait."
Bhansali is known for his romantic period dramas like Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani, and Padmaavat. Therefore, the pairing definitely made headlines and the internet was abuzz with memes about the casting. Twitterati started circulating an old picture of Alia Bhatt as a child with a young Salman Khan.
Many even speculated that the two might be playing siblings in the film. However, recent reports state that Salman Khan and Alia Bhatt will be romantically paired opposite each other.
Reportedly, the film is a contemporary romance rooted in the Indian culture. Salman is a businessman in his mid-40s, while Alia plays a 20 something aspiring actress. Reportedly, the plot has been written taking the age factor into consideration.
On the other hand, the trailer of Ajay Devgn’s next film De De Pyaar De, revolves around the story of a 50-year-old man falling in love with a woman nearly half his age. The trailer of the film had Ajay Devgn justifying his character by comparing his story to that of real-life couples like George Clooney and Amal Clooney, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones and even Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan.
Of course, there are films like Chennai Express in which Deepika Padukone’s character addresses Shah Rukh Khan’s character’s age, but ends up with him nevertheless. Because who can ever deny the knight in shining armour coming to the rescue of the damsel in distress?
As they say, age is just a number… and jail is just a room.
