Every year, January 15 is celebrated as the Army Day in India. On this day in 1949, Lieutenant General KM Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India.
The 72nd Army Day Parade, held at New Delhi's Cariappa Parade Ground on Wednesday was attended by Army Chief Gen M M Naravane, Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria, Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh and Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat.
It marked the first time a woman led the contingent. Army's Captain Tania Shergil was the Parade Adjutant this year.
It was also the first time that a chief of defence staff is attending the parade.
