5 easy habits to help you save the Earth!
Leading a sustainable life is super easy - if you follow these easy steps to modify your habits.
Remember those massive garbage mounds in Wall-E? The film showed a post-apocalyptic version of Earth, where our beautiful planet was left to rot as a giant landfill, while the remnants of humanity evolved into an unrecognisable mutation of themselves.
The only life left on Earth was a single shoot, a small little spark of life.
Now here's the thing - the threat posed by climate change becomes more immediate every day.
Governments have been slow to recognize the need for regulations that make our daily lives more sustainable, but here's what you can do to help keep our lives on earth just a little more comfortable for a lot longer.
1. Buy reusable grocery bags.
Start shopping smart, and shop green. All you have to do is be prepared. Keep a tote bag or a shopping bag on hand whenever you go shopping so you can skip the plastic.
Pro Tip: Always keep a spare in the trunk of your car, in case you have to do an unplanned shop stop!
2. Carry a reusable water bottle with you at all times!
Our oceans are filling up fast with discarded, single use plastic. One major source of this is the huge number pastic bottles we buy and instantly dispose. India alone generates approximately 26,000 tonnes of plastic waste every single day.
You can combat this by slight changes in your lifestyle, and it's as easy as just carrying a reusable water bottle around. Remember the 3R's - Reuse, Reduce, Recycle.
3. Invest in a reusable coffee cup
Whether your beverage is tea or coffee, the number of single use plastic and paper cups we all go through is way too high!
How can you do your part? Grab a travel mug that you can buy/pour your coffee into. Keep your drink warm and keep your planet green, all in one fell swoop.
And hey, while you're at it, maybe you could start carrying around a little pouch holding a set of reusable cutlery, and a reusable metal/steel straw? This little gesture could do wonders for the environment.
4. Shorten those showers
Sure, the earth is 70 per cent water, but here's what we don't always realise. Water is one of our most precious resources. The world is under immense water stress already, and climate change is just making matters worse.
One easy way to help is by shortening the time you spend in the shower. A five minute shower will get you just as clean as a 20 minute one, but you'd be saving a whole lot of water and energy if you keep it short.
And since we're in the bathroom anyway, one more thing you could do is turn off the faucet while you're brushing. Simple, easy, but if all of us do it, that tiny little gesture could make a massive difference.
5. Choose sustainable hygeine alternatives
While we're on the topic of personal hygeine, let's talk about some of the products we use every day. Pads and tampons have plastic in them that never disappears. Instead, you could try switching to menstrual cups, or even biodegradable napkins. Men - this goes out to you as well. Switch from regular plastic toothbrushes to bamboo alternatives! Choose stainless steel razors while you shave instead of disposable plastic ones. And while you're in the shower, try to opt for shower gels and face washes that don't have microbeads in them? These beads are often made of plastic, and wash into our oceans, just to be ingested by marine life. In the grand scheme of things, you end up consuming these microplastics yourself.
Reduce demand and reduce pollution - it's as easy as that.
