20 years of Hrithik Roshan: The top 5 dance performances of Duggu
The man, the myth, the legend -- Hrithik Roshan completes 20 years in Bollywood. Here's a scientific study on whether he has rubber for bones or not.
When Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai released exactly 20 years back today, the hearts of Indians, and especially those of the heterosexual female population had skipped a massive beat. A new kid was on the block. Hrithik was his name and he could do no wrong.
He had the body of a Greek God, eyes with ocean hues, moves of Jagger and the charm of a heart-throb. In fact, according to some linguists, the word "heart-throb" was invented to exclusively describe the Roshan scion.
At the turn of the century, Hrithik triggered what can only be called mass hysteria as he danced to Ae Mere Dil and made a permanent place in our hearts.
That day and today, Duggu has faced the highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows of Bollywood. But one thing has remained constant - his dancing skills.
So, here are the top 5 dance performances on film, from one of the finest specimens of our species.
1. Ek Pal Ka Jeena
Those of you who thought that I have mistaken the title of this song as 'Ae Mere Dil' in the third paragraph are wrong. I was just expressing the feelings of billions of Indians when they saw a gyrating Hrithik in a see-through t-shirt stealing hearts like he was some Nirav Modi of love.
We can bet that even today if you hear that riff or what is popularly known as 'tadang tang ta ta', you can't help but pretend to push an uneven wall with frequent buzzing caress. You know the step and so does your grandmother. Just ask her.
2. Main Aisa Kyun Hoon
If Ek Pal Ka Jeena made you fall in love with Hrithik, then Mai Aisa Kyun Hoon was when you wanted to preserve his body and his neurons. Scientists confirm that it's the biggest mystery after the Bermuda triangle occurrences, as to how exactly did Hrithik move his body the way he did in the shot.
Team Buzzfeed Unsolved was this close to investigating the supernatural understanding between the beats and Hrithik's body. The fact that another dancing legend Prabhu Deva choreographed this track just shows that mere mortals like us just don't deserve such breathtaking sights. *Sighs*
3. Dhoom Again
When I was watching the video again to write this article, I don't know what happened, but I teared up a little. Not sure if it was the nostalgia for a simpler time or if it were those percussion beats which can awaken the youth even in the dead.
An oiled-up Hrithik with that dirty vest on and the turquoise stole was all kinds of sexy in 2006. A LOT has changed in these 14 years, (ask economists) but this video continues to be sexy. If Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai acting as hot thieves at their primes wasn’t an overkill already, they decided to shoot this post-credit death-by-awesomeness. Since then IITs have lost several possible students to this song.
This one feels entirely different from all the other videos mentioned in the list. I was initially thinking of putting 'it's magic' from Koi Mil Gaya here, because of the part it played in my childhood. As I saw Baawre, the Bengali in me came out, as did a muffled and embarrassed 'Baba re' from my mouth.
Though different, but Baawre too, has Hrithik in a black see-through shirt. And the things Roshan does here can look like poetry in motion. If reports are to be believed, Wordsworth watched this at least thrice a day to sharpen his poetry skills at point.
You can watch it for any reason. No judgement.
I mean 'kyun lamhe kharab karein, aa galti behisab karein' (why waste moments, come let's make some mistakes), except there is no mistake in admitting that even at 46 years of age, Hrithik can undo the entire nation with just a shake of his legs.
Who hasn't tried doing the Ghungroo step? And if you haven't are you even living? This one doesn't have as much dance as some of the others do on the list, but find me another song which can calm you and baffle you at the same time.
Like a fine wine, Hrithik's rapid, rubbery but graceful moves are getting too intoxicating for our comfort as time is passing. If you too are a fellow connoisseur, let us know about possible hangover cures.
