16 years of Kal Ho Na Ho: Did KHNH redefine love?
Starred by Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta, the movie told a story that love is not just about getting together, it is also about sacrifice. It went on to win two National Film Awards and eight Filmfare Awards.
Kal Ho Na Ho just completed 16 years today. The movie, starring Shah Rukh Khan Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta, is still cherished by movie lovers for its heartwarming plot on unconditional love and Sonu Nigam Songs.
When it came out, the movie was different in its plot. The cliche formula for any Bollywood love story was, the boy loves the girl, the girl loves the boy, but there is a hurdle -- in the form of different religion, the financial status of the guy, the attitude of the brother or father of the girl (like DDLJ).
But Kal Ho Na Ho had a different plot. The hurdle -- which is often addressed as ‘Crisis’ as per screenplay experts -- was a fatal disease that Aman, the star character played by Shahrukh Khan, had.
Aman falls in love with Naina, played by Preity Zinta. Naina also falls in love with Aman. But he does not show his feelings towards her because he is aware that he will die soon, leaving her in grief.
So, the movies showed that love is not just about getting together, it is also about sacrifice.
For many, especially for the late 80s and early 90s kids, Kal Ho Naa Ho was a movie that made them cry - even the ones who said they are very “practical” and don’t cry while watching films.
Kal Ho Naa Ho was written by Karan Johar and DIrected by Nikhil Advani. It was co-produced by Karan Johar’s father Yash Johar under the banner Dharma Productions. As per reports, the budget of the movie was Rs 28 crore, and it is said to have collected around Rs 86 crore at the box office.
It won two National Film Awards and eight Filmfare Awards.
The most famous dialogue of this film is, ‘Pyaar ka pehla kadam dosti hai, aur aakhri bhi, bus beech ke kadam reh gaye hain’ (The first step of love is friendship and it is the last step as well, the steps in between are unsaid).
